Mountain/Ultra/Trail

Mountain/Ultra/Trail - known as "MUT" - covers three areas of mostly off-road running. Some events are a blend of these areas such as Ultra and Trail.

Ultra distance is longer than a marathon (26.22 miles), with race distances usually starting at 50km. These may take place on tracks, roads (usually multiple loops), or trails.
Trail running is off-road.  Terrain may be similar to higher level cross country running or be technical courses with hazardous footing.  Trails can be wide and well-worn or single-track and require uninterrupted attention, rock-hard (with rocks), or wet and muddy.
Mountain running races may be all-uphill or up-and-down courses, and may be single loop, multiple loop, or point to point. The slope of the course can be mild or extreme.  Footing in mountain races can be pavement, trail, or a combination.

Oregon offers so many mountain and trail opportunities. Go here to view one list of ultra running events in the state. USATF national Mountain Ultra Trail website page offers a variety of events and resources. Go here and explore.

If you have questions about MUT or want to suggest a MUT event the Association might want to host or co-host, contact Mike Blackmore, USATF Oregon MUT Committee Chair, at: blackmoremassage@gmail.com.
